Abstract
Epilepsy is an ancient disease, but people with epilepsy often face prejudice due to widespread misperceptions by the public. This prejudice can reach extreme levels in some Asian cultures, to the point that people with epilepsy may have difficulty obtaining a job or maintaining relationships if their condition is known. As a result, many patients choose to hide their diagnosis. Many people misconstrue epilepsy as a genetic disorder that can be passed between generations, and therefore may be reluctant to marry or become pregnant if a partner has epilepsy. Therefore, it is important to understand and manage epilepsy accurately, as steps on the pathway to a cure. In order for patients to manage epilepsy on their own, they need to understand epilepsy properly and cope with it correctly. It is important to take the necessary medication regularly, manage seizure-aggravating factors, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Keeping a seizure diary and using online resources such as Epilia.net (http://www.epilia.net), are tools to help patients manage their epilepsy. The aim of this paper is to explain specific self-management strategies for Korean patients with epilepsy and to organize and focus on specific details of scenarios that are commonly experienced by people with epilepsy in South Korea.
